Good Friday
Today is Good Friday. Today is the day that Jesus died to make atonement for our sins. Today is a good day.
A few months ago I won a Twitter contest to go see rjd2 for free in Denver. I decided I would take the day off. Yesterday I realized that today coincided with Good Friday. Since I don’t work today, I woke up this morning around 10. I turned on the tv and got to watch The Price is Right while my body came out of hibernation. This was a nice change and reminded me of my grandma.
When I was young I would occasionally spend the night at my grandma’s house. My parents would drop me off in the early evening. Grandma and I would eat cookies and milk and watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune while we played Rummy. After a few hours we would retire to my grandma’s room and we would watch Channel 64 as I fell asleep on her couch. I would ease into sleep by the comforting and memorable smell of Avon lotion, cigarette’s and NA beer from Stater Brothers. When I woke up Grandma would make me a bowl of Frosted Flakes with banana and we would watched The Price is Right.
I digress…back to today. I got out of bed, grabbed a bowl of cereal and sat back on my bed. I check my email, opened iTunes and started listening to Braille‘s new album Weapon Aid. As the album progressed I thought “this is pretty nice!” and then I heard it. Track 4 “Shoeless Joe” followed by “Resurrect Me”. Wow! Shoeless Joe hit me right between the eyes with a reality check. I had been looking so hard at the opportunities some of the people I admire have had that I hadn’t even considered the obstacles and issues they have faced.
A moment later the piano track from Resurrect Me came into play…hardness broken, heart opened. Wow Braille…this is the track. The chorus hits hard and reminds me of what my concentration should be on today. Not some concert that I will enjoy, but is only temporary. Not the show that entertains and fills me with memories and feelings of peace. My mind and focus should be on the one thing that lasts forever and the one who gives me peace and will be my focus for eternity. JESUS THE CHRIST!
We are called to share in the sufferings of Christ, even to the point of death for some. What better day for Christ to bring this to my attention and remind me of the ultimate price he paid for me…God, like so many times before used music to speak to my heart and bring about a change in my perspective. The chorus to Braille’s Resurrect Me speaks it perfectly. Thank you Braille, you are a great brother and I am thankful to share in our Fathers kingdom with you.
“Resurrect me, Ohh won’t you res-ur-rect me, cause I think I’m dead…and if not I’m dyin…bring me back to life!”
