5 Unbiblical Churchisms (1/5)
“Pride comes before the fall”
This is a common saying among the church that shows that we are far from a Berean society (Acts 17:10-11). Let’s go to the word to see what it says.
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.” Proverbs 16:18
We can see here the bible states “Pride goes before destruction” not a fall. The Hebrew word for pride used here is almost exclusively used in regards to the glory of God or the wickedness of men. The following references to the wickedness of men refer to God’s judgment being brought upon them (Lev 26:19, Job 35:12, Psa 59:12, Isa 13:11, Isa 13:19, Isa 14:11, Isa 16:6, Jer 13:9, Jer 48:29). The word “destruction” in Hebrew means “breaking, fracture, shattering, crushing.”
I think this illustrates the extreme danger of pride. This is not merely a negative aspect of life that will cause you to stumble now and then; it will destroy you.
